Who's the Lady? ... Read The Courtship of Adelbert Dribble in this Issue!
July 31st, 1944
“THE COURTSHIP OF ADELBERT DRIBBLE.” Adelbert Dribble traps Superman in order to pose as him and win the affections of his one, true love...but he gets more than he bargained for!
Superman: When Superman answers an appeal for help published in the want-ads of the Daily Planet, he ends up at the home of eccentric Adelbert Dribble. Dribble lures Superman into a rubber room which he seems unable to break out of, since the walls merely bounce under the impact of his fists.
With Superman out of the way, Dribble dons a Superman suit himself and with the aid of a propellor, flies off. Dribble's plan is to win the admiration of Bertha Bigge by pretending to be Superman. Dribble has paid some actors to pretend to be criminals so he can 'capture' them. However, while Dribble is acting out his Superman role, some real criminals abduct Bertha, hoping to hold her hostage to prevent Superman from interfering in their plans.
The real Superman agrees to help Dribble find Bertha, but only if he confesses to her that he isn't really Superman. Dribble agrees, and the pair find Bertha and defeat the kidnappers. However, before Dribble can confess his deception, Bertha makes him promise to do something to alleviate the drought that has been plaguing Metropolis. Dribble reluctantly agrees.
He discovers a mountain lake above Metropolis, and steals some dynamite to blow up the mountain ridge, allowing the lake to drain into the water reservoir. However, he misjudges the size of the lake, and causes a flood.
Superman saves the day by damming the lake, and Dribble confesses to Bertha that he isn't really Superman, becoming immensely relieved when she tells him she loves him even more now that she knows he's an ordinary man.
